TRANSFORMATIONAL INQUIRY:
A NEW DIRECTION IN PSYCHOTHERAPY

Join a community of therapists moving beyond pathology and technique to rediscover what truly heals: authentic presence and human connection.

What Is Transformational Inquiry

Transformational Inquiry invites a fundamental shift in how we think about therapeutic work. Rather than asking “What’s wrong and how do we fix it?” we ask “What conditions allow healing to naturally emerge?”

For over 30 years, I’ve watched therapy become increasingly dominated by protocols, diagnoses, and evidence-based techniques—all valuable tools, but something essential was being lost.

TI returns us to what makes therapy genuinely therapeutic: the quality of presence we bring and the depth of connection we create.

Connect, connect, and continue to connect while resisting the urge to discover, name, and fix pathology.

Transformational Concept
Therapist Mindset

This approach is for therapists who:

  • Feel constrained by model-driven interventions
  • Sense their clients need something more than their techniques can provide
  • Want to practice from authentic curiosity rather than expert knowing
  • Are willing to question the pathology paradigm that dominates our field
  • Seek colleagues who value presence over performance

The Book

Being with People: Transformational Inquiry in Psychotherapy offers both philosophical foundation and practical guidance for presence-centered practice.

WHY TRANSFORMATIONAL INQUIRY MATTERS

A Different Therapeutic Stance

Most therapeutic approaches, regardless of their theoretical orientation, share common assumptions: that problems need naming, that change requires intervention, that the therapist holds expertise the client lacks.

TI questions these foundations.

What if symptoms carry wisdom rather than pathology? What if our presence matters more than our interventions? What if healing emerges not from what we do, but from the quality of connection we create?

After three decades of clinical work, teaching, and supervision, I’ve developed a framework that honors both therapeutic skill and radical presence—a way of being with clients that transcends technique while maintaining clinical competence.

What Leaders in Therapy Are Saying

VOICES IN THE FIELD

Joan D. Atwood, Ph.D., LCSW-R, LMFT
AAMFT Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor; President and CEO, Marriage and Family Therapy of New York; Past Professor Emerita, Hofstra University

“With 50 years of experience, I have consistently believed in the importance of connecting with clients in a truly human way. Dr. Maione presents a critical insight: the necessity of moving beyond theoretical frameworks. While theory broadens understanding, it can also become a limitation. This book encourages therapists to prioritize connection with the client, let go of personal judgments, and shift away from seeking pathology. A must-read manual for mental health professionals.”

Ronald J. Chenail, Ph.D.
Professor of Family Therapy, Nova Southeastern University; Co-Editor-in-Chief, The Qualitative Report

“Relationships are at the heart of Dr. Maione’s transformational approach—exploring how we separate and connect with others and ourselves. He presents ways we can weave together healing narratives from the various experiential threads inside and outside our beings. Best of all, Paul spreads a hopeful message encouraging us to live well with others—even if that other is oneself. Being with People serves as a valuable travel companion.”

Douglas Flemons, Ph.D., LMFT
AAMFT Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor; Co-Director, Context Consultants; Past Professor Emeritus of Family Therapy, Nova Southeastern University

“In this compelling alternative to model-forward therapeutic engagement, Paul Maione celebrates the transformative properties of non-judgmental curiosity, deep respect, and therapeutic presence. He makes a compelling case for us to commit not to correcting clients but to connecting with them, not to diagnosing and fixing their pathologies but to facilitating their capacity to connect with forgotten or unappreciated resources. Maione’s personal warmth and his wisdom as a clinician and supervisor illuminate every page. What a gift to the field!”

Featured Quote

The most sophisticated therapeutic intervention may not be an intervention at all. Rather, it may be the simple yet profound practice of truly being present with other human beings in their suffering and growth. This isn’t a technique to master—it’s a way of being to cultivate
